ENG 101 Academic Skills in English I

This course aims at preparing students to use academic skills in English.


ENG 102 Academic Skills in English II

ENG 102 is a compulsory course for first year students. ENG 102 focuses on the cognitive skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking. Students' academic listening skills will be improved by listening to important / relevant information from lectures or discussions and reading skills by reading recent academic texts and then using this information to create an output task. Speaking focuses on giving presentations and students get prepared to express their ideas and opinions by speaking persuasively and coherently. The writing component is a consolidation of the speaking activities.


FA 111 Drawing and Representation for Fashion Design I

This course introduces the students to the basic principles of drawing including, line, volume, composition, perspective, and color. It develops their freehand drawing technique while introducing them to a variety of tools and materials. This course encompasses geometrical drawing and still-life


FA 112 Drawing and Representation for Fashion Design II

This course introduces the basic principles of drawing and develops freehand drawing skills. Moreover, it will bring into practice the drawing materials and different dyes.


FA 152 Introduction to Fashion Design

This course encompasses the fashion design process from inspiration through garment construction and fit improvement. Focus is on terminology, the creative process of design, patternmaking and sewing. The course also provides students understanding and know-how of garment construction by analyzing the relationship with the human body.


FA 201 Fashion Studio: Introduction

This course aims to develop research skills in relation to a variety of briefs which address different sectors within the industry. An interpretation of concepts through design development, fabric customization, 3D design development techniques, and product realization will encourage creativity. Market research and brand analysis will help students realize the positioning of their designs within the industry.


FA 202 Fashion Design Studio: Collection I

This course provides to investigate and experience experimental approaches to garment development and production. Computer-aided design is adopted as a primary presentation tool throughout the semester.


FA 203 Fashion Graphics

This course is concerned with the representation of fabrics, garments and the fashion figure. An introduction to technical drawing for fashion enables a greater understanding of garment structure; fabric rendering enables students to focus on the texture and pattern of a variety of fabric qualities. Combined with the fashion figure drawing, these skills will enable students to present their design ideas in a more professional manner.


FA 204 Fashion Graphics and Representation

This course will develop on existing skills to achieve a more professional level of workmanship and presentation of design ideas. It aims to develop students' ability to communicate their ideas creatively by using creative visual and digital media and to develop skills to meet current industry requirements. In addition, students will apply the techniques of digital visual communication to create a technical drawing, product development, branding solutions, illustration, which can be presented as a professional portfolio of work.


FA 205 History of Dress

In this course, basic terminology and forms of historic dresses will be explained from primitive cultures to the beginning of the 20th century with an understanding of the importance and use of historical research in design practice.


FA 206 History and Culture of Fashion

In this course, basic terminology and forms of fashion and dresses starting from the 19th century will be explained with an understanding of the importance and use of historical research in design practice.


FA 207 Pattern Making and Sewing Skills I

This course provides an understanding of the connection between the human body and garment construction. Students learn how to create a pattern for their designs by using flat pattern and draping techniques, and practice hands-on skills for production. The main product focus in this course are bodice and dress. With the overall content, the course supports students’ creativity in fashion design enhancing their knowledge and skills about the methods through garment production.


FA 208 Pattern Cutting and Sewing Skills II

Students improve their skills of sewing and pattern making in order to develop their creativity by understanding of a complete garment. Students learn how to create a pattern for their designs by using flat pattern techniques.


FA 213 Textile Materials for Fashion Designers I

This course will provide essential knowledge about fibers’ physical, mechanical, chemical, favorable and unfavorable properties. Furthermore it will cover the preparation of a fabric swatch book.


FA 214 Textile Materials for Fashion Designers II

This course will provide the analysis of basic woven fabrics constructed by plain, twill and satin weave. Furthermore, it will cover the preparation of a fabric swatch book.


FFD 101 Art and Design Studio 1

This is a course to introduce the basic principles of design that enable the students to establish the network of relations between the elements of a composition in any medium by way of ‘learning by doing’ method.
In the table below, the main topics that are introduced to the students within the context of this course are given weekly. However due to the nature/structure of the course many of these topics that appear in the list sequentially are worked out simultaneously in practice.

ENG 310 Essential Speaking Skills in English

ENG 310 is a compulsory course for third year students and is designed to enable them to speak more effectively while expressing themselves in a variety of areas, such as business related and academic related topics. These areas range from participating in discusiions to presenting information in the form of short presentations, known as Pecha Kuchas. Students will also take part in role plays and formal debates.


ENG 410 English for Career Development

This course is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge that they will need when they start their professional lives. The course simulates all stages of the job application process, including topics like finding job openings, CVs, job application forms, cover letters, job interviews, and following up, as well as handling job offers and rejection.


FA 301 Fashion Theory

The course focuses on the relations of body, dress and clothing constructs the knowledge and system of fashion upon the readings of classical and contemporary texts that have remark on fashion history and culture.


FA 401 Fashion Trends and Predictions

In the first half of the course, students visualize the fashion concepts through moodboards , while in the second half they develop and predict a fashion trend for a future season to present creatively.


FA 451 Applied Workshop in Fashion I

In this course, the students have an opportunity of making a healthy career plan by coming together with the professionals from industry (managers, designers, fashion photographers, art directors, style editors, visual merchandising experts etc.) and academic circles and by learning about opportunities and constraints, which influence fashion industry. In addition, the students are brought together with career guidance experts to learn about personal CV/portfolio preparation and interview techniques. The students registered to the course are also encouraged to participate in national / international art and design events.


FA 494 Graduation Thesis

Supported by a series of lectures, paralleled by a series of minor assignments, students will write an academic paper of ca. 3000 words, about a fashion related subject of their own choice.


FB 301 Production Processes in Fashion Industry

This course examines the production processes in the mass market of fashion. In doing so, the students will acquire an understanding of the structure of the industry and production concepts. Contemporary issues in production management are considered throughout the course in order to provide a global perspective for the students. At the end of the semester, the students will be able to analyse the production processes of apparel by using professional terminology.


FB 302 Fashion Management Project I

This course covers; teamwork concept, management concept, and strategies, understanding of technological and cultural trends, marketing, brand management, and fashion project management subjects.


FB 403 Fashion Management Project II

In this course, students will learn how to address the target audience while conducting a marketing campaign by considering the market segment of a fashion brand. In addition to building a brand portfolio, they will create a marketing campaign using print, web and visual merchandising tools.


FB 498 Graduation Project*

This course focuses on the conceptual and practical skills to represent fashion and fashion related items in a commercial manner facing the visual side of fashion retail design, fashion visual merchandising and fashion retail marketing.


FD 301 Fashion Design Studio: Collection II

Starting with an experimental and conceptual design project, the course covers two sectoral projects including preparation for participation to a design competition and collaboration with a manufacturing company.


FD 302 Fashion Design Studio: Collection III

Along with a series of seminars and lectures on sustainable fashion, the course focuses on developing a slow fashion design collection considering the needs and current situations of fashion industry, as well as developing the professional presentation and communication skills.

This course covers different fabric manipulation techniques and applications used in fashion design.

This course provides a broad overview of marketing in the fashion and design field, marketing research and consumer behaviors from a fashion industry perspective.


HIST 100 Principles of Atatürk and History of Revolution

This course provides a general information of the events from the end of the 19. century until the end of the Turkish War of Independence and the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923 and the following period until 1990’s.

TURK 100 Turkish

Students will be taught how to use the written and verbal communication tools accurately and efficiently in this course. Various types of verbal and written statements will be examined through a critical point of view by doing exercises on understanding, telling, reading, and writing. Punctuation and spelling rules, which are basis of written statement, will be taught and accurate usage of these rules for efficient and strong expression will be provided. As for verbal statement, students will be taught how to use the body language, use accent and intonation elaborately, and use presentation techniques.


BA 320 Consumer Behaviour

Moving from micro to macro topics, perception, learning, motivation, personality and lifestyle, attitudes, identities, decision making mechanisms and social and cultural interactions of consumers are the main topics of this course. Different dimensions of consumption before, during and after purchasing are investigated.


BA 326 Retail Management in Fashion Business

Building and maintaining sustainable relations with customers, retail businesses by ownership and store type, retailing through web and other nontraditional methods, understanding consumer behavior, site selection are among the topics to be discussed in this course.


BA 334 Cost Analysis in Fashion Industry

This course will examine the fundamental concepts of the managerial and cost accounting by explaining costs, expenses, costvolumeprofit analysis, and cost methods. Under the concept of managerial accounting, this course will analyze budgeting, controlling and decision making processes.


BA 417 E-Business

This course will cover the major aspects of Ebusiness environment and operations with the emphasis on its impact on the local businesses.


FA 302 Fashion Editorial and Writing

Within this course students will be made familiar with theoretical concepts which create a base for fashion journalism: criticism of fashion as a social/cultural phenomenon, criticism of fashion designers as artists/creators, criticism of the way people dress. Specific journalistic texts will be analyzed in class and be used as a basis for short pieces of critical writing by the students themselves. The students will have a better understanding of the functions of images in the magazines, along with advertising campaigns and editorials.By the end of the course they are asked to complete a part of a magazine with their own creative editorial and styling work.


FA 311 Footwear and Bag Design

Within the context of contemporary fashion, this course focuses of the specialization of accessory design, primarily footwear and handbag design but also other key product fields such as belts and hats. Through an exploration of shoe and handbag anatomy, an examination of historical and contemporary products, and with consideration of contemporary trends, students will become familiar with this sector, before applying this knowledge in a practical context. Trend research, concept development, product family design development and illustration will amalgamate in a professional portfolio at the end of semester.


FA 315 Advanced Fashion Illustration

This course will build on existing skills to develop a more professional standard of fashion illustration. An introduction to the history of fashion illustration and contemporary practice will help students identify various styles, techniques, media, and illustrators. There will be a strong focus on drawing, and as exploration of various techniques and media including paint, collage, photography and computer aided design.


FA 320 Advanced Technical Illustration Techniques

This course will build on existing skills in the Adobe Illustrator to create flat vector design drawings of garments and accessories for specification sheets and presentation boards for different sectors within the fashion industry. It will explore more complex tools, features and palettes specific to this program. A focus on proportion, shape and construction will help create professional drawings to an industry standard.


FA 350 Denim Design Studio

aDenim has its unique position in the world apparel industry with its special language and production methods. This course aims the students to learn about these special methods and language. During this course students will be working on denim projects in order to apply the processes of design and production of denim with details, recognize denim silhouettes, make technical drawing, make necessary pattern alterations recognize fitting mistakes and offers pattern alterations, recognize and use the machines required to produce denim.


FA 360 Corporate Apparel and Uniform Design

This course will build on existing design skills to allow students to develop a portfolio of work aimed specifically at the corporate apparel & uniform sector. Students will explore the garment requirements of various industries within the service sector, including hospitality, catering, hotel, banking and airline industries. They will also investigate leisure wear for sports clubs, spa and gym sector. Students will learn to develop a concept in conjunction with the clients requirements, corporate identity and the functional capabilities and limitations of the garments. Colour, fabric, logos, and finishing’s such as print and embroidery will also be considered. A strong focus on professional presentation of design using computer aided design will allow the student to build a strong portfolio of work.


FA 390 Fashion Brand Communication

This course introduces the main aspects of fashion brand communication. It compares different approaches of fashion advertising campaigns in the global fashion market.


FA 401 Fashion Trends and Predictions

FA 403 Fashion Merchandising

Students learn the role of merchandising and its surrounding business environments and the responsibilities of the merchandiser.

This course will provide essential knowledge to design basic woven fabrics. Moreover it will cover the preparation of a fabric swatch book consisted of designed fabrics.


FA 411 Fashion Photography and Styling

This course introduces the historical development of basic photography, light knowledge and fashion photography, identifying and visualizing current trends.


FA 415 Fashion Show Organization and Choreography

In this course, the students will organize a fashion show with all its technical details.


FA 416 Design Narratives through Writing

The course is intended to familiarize students with techniques of writing and written narration. It contains theoretical and practical written narration knowledge related to their design and works of art. Different techniques in writing connected to their own composition will be presented to the students. At the end of this course they will be able to find out effective expressions for writing techniques. They will be able to develop themselves with ‘Imaginative Writing’ ‘Fictional Text and Practices’, ‘Techniques of Written Expression’, ‘Creative Writing’.

FA 419 Contemporary Fashion Designers

This course contains to teach an archive on most leading contemporary fashion designers and informs on biographies and collections of these designers that will be a referential guide for further research of students.


FA 421 Clothes in the Movies

The theory and history will be summarily introduced in lectures. Simultaneously, watching films and discussing them in class will start from the first class on. This will remain the most important activity throughout the course. The course will be divided into three thematically organized chapters: a. films about the fashion industry; b. FA 423 Innovations in Fashion Products and Technologies

This course provides an understanding to relate fashion design discipline knowledge with innovative design, material and production techniques of today and of tomorrow. Contemporary functional and social clothing needs are investigated in order to conceptualize new design scenarios to fulfill these needs as wearable art forms or actual functional design solutions.


FA 425 The Cultural History of Cosmetics

The cultural history of cosmetics from de Prehistory to the beginning of the 20th century.


FA 427 Paris, Fashion and Impressionist Painting

The course will be divided in three parts. In the first part, impressionist painting will be introduced with lectures, watching documentaries and reading. In the second, the emergence of the fashion phenomenon in Paris in the years 1860-1890 will be discussed with the help of lectures, film and reading. It is a fascinating period in which the idea of ‘being modern’ is central for the first time in history. In the third and last segment of the course, the focus will be on a few art works in which clothing plays a major role. Students will choose one of them and analyze it in such a way that all main aspects of the course are taken into account.


FA 430 Menswear Design Studio

Menswear has its unique position in the world apparel industry with its special language and production methods. This course aims the students to learn about these special methods and language. FB 401 Fashion Merchandising Management

• Fashion Merchandising Management Course is designed to have knowledge on fashion merchandising management and fashion buying; forecasting and analysing trends; consumer behaviour; market research; consumer segmentation, targeting and positioning; product development process; developing a collection in line with sales and purchasing budgets, trends, brand identity and target market; merchandise planning; pricing strategies; sourcing process; supply chain management; inventory management; and visual merchandising.


FD 304 Advanced Textile Studio

This course covers the applications of different fabric manipulation techniques used in fashion design.


FD 311 Costume Design

This course is an extension of FASHION DESIGN STUDIO and due to its practical nature only for advanced fashion design students (3rd or 4th year).


FD 313 Computer Aided Pattern Making

This course supports pattern making by teaching functions of a recognized CAD system and applying these functions in creating and modifying the pattern. With these tools students can develop patterns for garment designs considering the industry’s demands, and provide a professional approach for fashion design.


FD 404 Portfolio Design for Fashion Design

The students are familiarized with conceptual and applied technics of digital visual communication in terms of layout a portfolio catalog in print and web and creating their own corporate identity according to their collections.


FD 411 Advanced Freehand Drawing

Within scope of this course, human body details, posture forms of various materials, basic drawing principles are shown.


FD 413 Innovative Fashion Design Studies

By making proposals, to create innovative and futuristic fashion design products by using probable readytowear and garment assembly techniques. To conceptualize new design scenarios which will answer a contemporary functional and social clothing problem as wearable art form or actual functional design solution.

In this course through the examination of the calendar and briefs of the design competitions organized by various sectors of fashion industry the students will be prepared in a way that they could apply to one national and one international competition .

FFD 304 Branding in Design Industry

In this course scientific research is undertaken within the brand management; students are expected to make a research, write an article, and make a strategic audit presentation on their individual research topics.


FFD 306 Intellectual Property Rights for Designers

The aim of this course is to introduce to the students, the basic concepts of law and provide concise information on legal definition of new, original and conservable designs, to inform them about the “ to do list” to protect a new and original design. In addition, this course aims to ensure that they have basic information about industrial and intellectual property rights regarding registered trademarks, patents, designs and copyrights. Determining new, original and conservable design concept and to do list for protecting the registered designs.


MMC 220 Theories of Communication

The following theories of communication will be discussed within the context of this course: Pluralist media paradigm, dominant media paradigm, Marxist media theory, critical media theory, the political economy of media, cultural studies.
