Course Objectives The aim of this course is to explore the effects of culture on different areas of psychology, especially on clinical psychology. In order to achieve this aim, this course will first explore how culture, ethnicity, and gender influence personality, emotions, motivation, and intelligence, as well as how they relate to the experience and expression of psychological disorders.
Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Will be able to apply cultural and cross-cultural approaches to psychology.
  • Will be able to recognize about cross cultural variations.
  • Will be able to investigate ethnocentric thinking, thinking biases and stereotypes.
  • Will be able to identify culture specific psychopathologies.
  • Will be able to apply methodology of cross cultural psychology research.
  • Will be able to identify the factors related to the mental health of special groups such as refugees and immigrants.
Course Description In this course the influence of culture on several areas of psychology, especially on the field of clinical psychology, would be introduced. The influence of the experiences of disadvantaged groups on mental health would be discussed throughout the semester.
