ENG 101 Academic Skills in English I

This course aims at preparing students to use academic skills in English.


ENG 102 Academic Skills in English II

ENG 102 is a compulsory course for first year students. ENG 102 focuses on the cognitive skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking. Students' academic listening skills will be improved by listening to important / relevant information from lectures or discussions and reading skills by reading recent academic texts and then using this information to create an output task. Speaking focuses on giving presentations and students get prepared to express their ideas and opinions by speaking persuasively and coherently. The writing component is a consolidation of the speaking activities.


ENG 310 Essential Speaking Skills in English

ENG 310 is a compulsory course for third year students and is designed to enable them to speak more effectively while expressing themselves in a variety of areas, such as business related and academic related topics. These areas range from participating in discusiions to presenting information in the form of short presentations, known as Pecha Kuchas. Students will also take part in role plays and formal debates.


ENG 410 English for Career Development

This course is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge that they will need when they start their professional lives. The course simulates all stages of the job application process, including topics like finding job openings, CVs, job application forms, cover letters, job interviews, and following up, as well as handling job offers and rejection.


FFD 101 Art and Design Studio 1

This is a course to introduce the basic principles of design that enable the students to establish the network of relations between the elements of a composition in any medium by way of ‘learning by doing’ method.
In the table below, the main topics that are introduced to the students within the context of this course are given weekly. However due to the nature/structure of the course many of these topics that appear in the list sequentially are worked out simultaneously in practice.


FFD 102 Art and Design Studio 2

This course enhances the development of the knowledge and skills necessary for structuring the network of relations among the elements of a composition, conveys the basic design principles through comparison of different disciplinary practices, and uses the method of “learning by doing”.


FFD 104 Computer Aided Technical Drawing

The course introduces the essential techniques of graphics, and stresses the incorporation and application of those within the virtual technology such as Computer Aided Design (CAD).


FFD 111 Drawing and Representation

The course introduces freehand drawing both in real or imaginary situations with rendering techniques that are used to accurately communicate the way objects and spaces look in three dimensional projections. Conceptual and presentational drawings and rendering in mixed media will be covered


FFD 121 History of Art and Design 1

Introduce students to the production of images and objects throughout history and to develop a visual sensibility about artistic and cultural production. Visual analysis of objects of art, design and architecture.


FFD 122 History of Art and Design 2

Introduction of the external factors that influence the forms of art, design and architecture throughout history and developing a visual sensibility about artistic and cultural production.


FFD 142 Model Making

The students will explore a range of materials and products avaliable for use of the professional designer and they will be able to use basic cutting, joining and finishing techniques to create physical models. They will develop skills in 3D model building/ relief techniques as an evaluation and presentation tool.


FFD 201 Computer Aided Architectural Graphics

The course introduces the essential techniques of architectural representation in 2D and 3D and stresses the incorporation and application for those within the virtual technology like Computer Aided Design (CAD)


FFD 202 Advanced Design Presentation

This course will consist of several advanced level design visualization and presentation studies. Students will make researches to gain a wide visual knowledge of presentations for different design disciplines. Exercises and applications will be done by students to improve their manual and computer skills, and develop their own styles of design presentation. Throughout the semester, a pop-up quiz will be given. Also, each week students will conduct thematic researches and present their finding in the class.


FFD 301 Furniture Design

This class is based on a hierarchy of design process learning skills, which build on each other: knowledge; comprehension; application; analysis; synthesis; and evaluation. These skills will be developed in class discussions and should be evident in the research reports and Project submissions at the end of the class. The course will be structured with two main exercises that will guide the students to the production of a working prototype.


FFD 451 Applied Workshop

The course includes topics such as career planning, job opportunities, job application examples, interview skills, introduction to business life, contemporary management, and research and development techniques, and these are taught through guest speakers, field-factory-institution visits, or as a seminar.


HIST 100 Principles of Atatürk and History of Revolution

This course provides a general information of the events from the end of the 19. century until the end of the Turkish War of Independence and the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923 and the following period until 1990’s.


IA 301 Interior Architecture Studio I

In this course, the design adaptation of existing functions and possible introduction of new functions to an existing public commercial context will be analyzed considering the careful approach to the built environment, existing programs of use and any pre-existing cultural values inherent in particular buildings. Along with the design problem solving, all the information on standards, norms, materials and state of the art technology will be examined in detail.


IA 302 Interior Architecture Studio II

During the semester, through the case studies and the theoretical background given by the instructors students will develop design strategies that respond to a brief in a specific and precise context (built or natural) using appropriate technologies and harmonic design strategies.


IA 401 Visionary and Future Interior Architecture Studies

In this course the students will define their first possible conceptual design ideology and identity. Afterwards, they will represent these findings in an interior architecture and environmental design project of their choice. These thoughts and presented ideas will be used as a base for your IA 498 Graduation Project.


IA 494 Graduation Thesis

In this course, the concept of academic writing, article structure creation and application methods are discussed. In this context, this course includes presentations and discussions on the subject. At the end of the course, it is aimed to reinforce the knowledge and skills acquired by the students about the research methods.


IA 498 Graduation Project

The course tries to summarize within the project all necessary information and stages that are needed to execute and develop a project in an professional environment.


IAED 101 Sensing Interiors

The course is structured according to the reality that the user is at the focus of design and that interior spaces are experienced with the five senses. It includes the discussion of the ordering principles of design in terms of perceiving and experiencing environment and organizing space.

IAED 202 Design Studio II

The second semester of the course is based on lectures, homework, demonstrations, discussions and homework, which dwell upon (within a framework of critical thinking) elements of design and the awareness of basic concepts, factors, functions, materials and design methods for multi-scaled three-dimensional projects. Lectures, demonstrations, and studio exercises explore the basics of 3D designing from color, form and shape to the process of design.


IAED 203 Construction and Materials I

During the first weeks of the term, the course will focus on an overview of general information on the technical aspects of the built environment. Regarding the construction systems,the course begins with the definition of the basic concepts of stability and strenght. Then it focuses on reinforced concrete, steel and wood structural systems as well as foundations, walls, floors, ceilings, roof & insulation systems.


IAED 204 Construction and Materials II

Properties of basic groups of building materials are reviewed, investigated and evaluated together with an overall knowledge of their typical traditional, current and future applications and the criteria for their selection. How the various building systems, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and environmental controlsare integrated into the design and construction process to provide a safe, healthy, and appropriate environment for human activity are explained. A basic idea of structure and static is described.


IAED 205 Design Semiotics for IAED

Imbedded into a general framework of aesthetics, the course offers a different analysis of sign systems by means of a semiotic instrument. It will imply denotations and connotations of design language, and will respectively refer to the medium and its messages. Destined to sharpen the consciousness of the future designers for signalizing metaphors within daily life, it will also deal with the uniformitarian vocabulary of mass production vs. handcraft, with the divergence between paradigm and syntagma. Additionally, a variety of analysis and theories about sign, signifier, signified, signification and semantics are to be studied within the course with case studies.


IAED 207 Environmental Control Systems for IAED

Architectural lighting, acoustics, and thermal comforts. Passive(natural)active(mechanical) techniques, basic concepts, materials, measurement of criteria, economical way of usage, and tremendous effects on interior and exterior spaces which must be considered at the earliest stage of the designing process.


IAED 209 History and Theory of Interior Design

The course focuses on the history and philosophy of interior design that encompasses numerous styles, movements, and individual artistic contributions. It aims to discuss historical interiors and styles from different cultural viewpoints, and examine their inherent qualities in order to more fully understand what constitutes a sense of place in the interior.


IAED 306 Construction Management

The course aims to introduce the students to the fundamentals of construction management and project planning focused on interior architecture projects. The course will be structured in 2 blocks: the first one will approach the basics of construction management and project planning processes and methods on the theoretical basis while the second will deal with the building planning methods and standards trough applied exercises on interior projects built environments.

The course will help students recognize the skills needed for university life and their career goals. These skills include self-awareness, goal setting, time management, effective communication, mindfulness and analytical thinking. The course will also raise students’ awareness on problems such as addiction and bullying.

TURK 100 Turkish

Students will be taught how to use the written and verbal communication tools accurately and efficiently in this course. Various types of verbal and written statements will be examined through a critical point of view by doing exercises on understanding, telling, reading, and writing. Punctuation and spelling rules, which are basis of written statement, will be taught and accurate usage of these rules for efficient and strong expression will be provided. As for verbal statement, students will be taught how to use the body language, use accent and intonation elaborately, and use presentation techniques.


IAED 206 Contemporary Design Discourse

The course focuses on the cultural, social and political context of the postIndustrial Revolution period. Approaches of art, design and architecture that have been influential since the 19th century are discussed and evaluated as an extension of this context.


IAED 304 Complex Interior Systems

Analyses and researches the planning and design criterion of multifunctional and complex interior systems by considering performance requirements and changing needs of user. Discusses the affects of layouts and furniture arrangements to the productivity and concentrates on the organizations and interior design concepts of the most common facilities such as, hotels, hospitals, schools, malls, and administrative buildings.


IAED 310 Advanced 3-D Modeling and Rendering in Computer Aided Design

The aim of the course is to build awareness about the concept of “sequence”. Digital sequence concept will be used within the control of camera, light, framing, and material components to build digital scenes. Students will be controling these notions to create digital environments which may be used in their design projects. Advanced modelling techniques, different rendering engines and and animation will be experienced.


IAED 320 Colors and Textures in Interiors

Introduces the use of color and texture in interior design. Emphasizes color theories, the psychology of colors and textures, and the application of colors and textures in designing interior environments.


IAED 330 Interior Marine Construction and Materials

Basic principles of naval architecture, ship geometry and hydrostatics, concept of intact and damaged stability, ship structures and materials, resistance and powering of ship and seakeeping are included in this course.


IAED 340 Universal Design

Within the course, various scaled projects are analyzed and redesigned in a “universal” way. The topics discussed in a parallel fashion with an Ergonomic base, aim to provide an elaborate understanding of designing spaces that not only accommodate and become functional for wheelchair users, but all kinds of people. Universal Design is often neglected in design education. It is seen as something that is sterile and a compulsory feature for disabled persons; as something that contradicts the creativity of a design project. The aim is for students to gain an understanding of the topic as an approach that is inclusive regardless of age, skill, or gender.


IAED 342 Digital Photography

Digital photography focuses on various techniques and principles for developing images. Students will be able to find answers to questions such as what is the best and the most convenient technique and the processing programs for developing photographs for interior architectures.


IAED 344 Spatial Photography

Spatial photography focuses on principles, and materials of indoor and outdoor shoots. Students will be able to find answers to questions such as what is the best and the most convenient technique for indoor/ outdoor photography and processing programs for interior/exterior architectures.


IAED 345 Earthquake Resistant Interiors

This course scopes the design solutions for space planning, furniture, and details, which might be lifesaving in an earthquake, and manufacturing the model of proposed detail solutions.


IAED 346 Interior Studies in Traditional Anatolian Houses

In this course, the students are going to read the related sources for researching Anatolian housing culture, to apply the comparative morphological analysis method for analyzing the interiors of traditional houses, to classify the main elements which form spaces and to discuss the reasons behind the regional differences. Within this scope, they are going to make field works and documentation, and present the results of their study.


IAED 347 Field Studies in Interior Architecture

This course ensures that students document the visited interiors in technical trips during the term and prepare a commentary presentation for each visit in the following week. Whereas the documentation includes photos and notes taken in the trip, the presentation involves descriptions, comparisons, and critics.


IAED 352 Introduction to Housing Studies

This course includes lectures and discussions on architectural and urban aspects of Housing in relation to wide range of architectural precedents that varies from historical to contemporary works chosen according to the weekly contextual framework. First module of the course will predominantly introduce the history of housing from the antiquity (pre-urban house) to 19th Century Housing practices following the core source of Norbert Schoenauer 2003 book "6000 Years of Housing", and second module will cover the 20th century and beyond with the critique on variety of interiors, typologies and precedents selected concurrently with the previous stage. This course will end with a case study that will enable the students to demonstrate the material covered through the semester.


IAED 366 Collective Act

In this course, social responsibility concept, social responsibility project design and application methods are discussed. By doing so, this course includes presentations and discussions on the subject. At the end of the course, it is aimed to reinforce the knowledge and skills acquired by the students within the social responsibility project that they will complete.


IAED 401 Introduction to Restoration and Preservation

The course introduces the general concept of conservation & cultural heritage through a historical perspective and provides information on the theory, technique & processes for the protection of cultural heritage.


IAED 403 Ecological and Bioclimatic Design

The course analyses, discusses and researches the eco system, ecological construction methods, bioclimatic design, environmental problems and pollution including air pollution, water pollution, solid wastes and noise pollution. Additionally, the course guides towards an investigation of ecological principles in human relationships, and the interaction with the environment.


IAED 404 Portfolio Design

In this course, the students are going to use web technologies and digital communication techniques to present their design ideas and projects made before in studios. The final project requires that each student will have a self composed web site, a PDF portfolio and a printed portfolio.

This course introduces the literature of scapes, architecture and interior design of “healthcare” and “hygiene” as reflections of social, political, economic and cultural agendas of the eras and geographies. Different-scale examples to be examined include open public spaces, public buildings, hospitals, buildings for infectious diseases, psychiatric architecture, healthy homes and furniture design. The course will discuss how eventually the notion of “health” and “healthy-living” ignited and spread the Modern Movement in architecture during the twentieth century and onwards via analyzing global and Ottoman-Turkish examples. IAED 410 Environment-Behavior Studies

This course examines the transactions between people and their everyday social and physical environments. Topics include environmental perception and cognition, environmental stressors such as noise, spatial behavior such as personal space and territoriality, physical settings where we live, work, and learn, in addition to designing for more user-centered and fitting environments.


IAED 420 Fine and Applied Arts from the Ottoman Era to Contemporary Turkey

The course will focus on 3 phases of Turkish culture. The ottoman era - from its beginning, showing various influences such as Persian Selcuk and Byzantine - up to the effective dissolution of the empire including late court artistic expressions. The Modernist period - examining the influence of internationalist styles in the 19th and 20th centuries from the development of a Turkish impressionist movement, through the republican period and up to the late formalism of the 60s and 70s. The contemporary period - examining the advent of conceptual art in Turkey, the development of contemporary art institutions and the manner in which major contemporary issues have influenced current art practice in Turkey

The course includes the interdisciplinary approaching to various aspects of intelligent and interactive spaces with a special emphasis on their different applications in information technology and innovative materials.

IAED 450 Textiles for Interiors

This course will provide basic knowledge about screen printing and digital printing techniques. Furthermore, it will cover the practice of applying designed fabrics to the interiors regarding home textile trends.


IAED 460 An Introduction to Contemporary Architectural Landscaping

This course includes the design of a project where all the basic landscape design principles and techniques will be used in a chosen project site. The basic considerations of the project will include: hard and soft landscape design, major landscape design principles, construction techniques and budgeting. The second section will be a presentation and discussion of important issues related to landscape design. These issues will include: the architectural context, indigenous gardens, ecology and sustainability, landscaping and urban renewal, the psychological effects of landscaping, urban farms, the history of gardening and landscape design in Anatolia, and a discussion on particular garden styles. The last section of the class will be a workshop and presentation by the students of their research and designs.


IAED 470 Interior Detailing

This course teaches the subjects related to interior detailing and enables students to use this knowledge in their designs, with a certain focus on the important elements of the interiors.
