GS 591 Research Design and Methods in Social Sciences

The aim of the course is to deliver a complete understanding of the various research methods used in social sciences, and to establish necessary practical skills required for their application. In this course, students will develop a formal research proposal for a master thesis or term project on a topic related to their individual graduate programs, with the supervision of their advisors, to be presented to the academic staff of the related graduate program.


GS 595 Seminar

Supervisors and students together will evaluate previous research on the basis of rules of academic writing and discuss how to apply skills related to critical reading, understanding, synthesizing and contrasting and comparing. Students will work together with an assigned instructor on a selected area in their discipline. Students are also required to write a paper/report in this seminar.


GS 599 Master Thesis

This course is designed to independently conduct a research and acquire the necessary competencies. Accordingly, a proper research question is identified under the guidance of an advisor, an extensive literature review is made, and a unique hypothesis and research design are determined by taking into consideration the methodologies and gaps in the literature. Within the framework of the research design, the relevant data is collected and a thesis including the theoretical basis, method, results and discussion of the research is written.


SEN 503 Geopolitics and Energy Security

This advanced course is designed to critically analyze and examine concept of energy security by taking into account the methodological approaches of geopolitics, focusing on various countries and regions.


SEN 509 Energy Trading and Risk Management

Focusing on the fundamentals and structure of the global electricity market primarily, the course also investigates the dynamics of the price mechanism by using analysis and modelling tools. Besides the principles and successful show cases of portfolio and risk management among energy trade, electricity and carbon markets in details. In order to support the theoretical background, an online trading game will be conducted throughout the course as well.


SEN 505 Energy Projects Management

The world of the energy projects, selecting energy projects strategically, the role of the projects in the organizations, planning the work activities, Project costs and budget, project activity scheduling


SEN 507 Regulatory Issues in the Power Sector

The following topics will be examined: The concept of liberalisation& regulation, EMRA, EU Energy Market, current power market in Turkey and its legislation, administrative and punitive sanctions in the electricity market, relevant consumer regulations, emission trading/low carbon development and power market interaction.


SEN 508 Past, Present and Future Fossil Markets: Legislative Structure

The following topics will be examined: Regulations related to the natural gas, LNG, petroleum and LPG markets, administrative and punitive sanctions in the fossil fuel market, settlement of disputes, low carbon development.


SEN 551 Renewable Energy Technologies

This advanced course is designed to explore the renewable energy technologies which are gaining momentum for the sustainable energy development of the world.


SEN 552 Energy, Climate Change, and Environment

The advanced course is designed to critically analyze the climate change, energy, and environmental issues. The issues will be dealt from economical and political perspectives. In this respect, developments in climate change negotiations and developments in carbon markets will be discussed in great detail.


SEN 553 Energy and Society

Energy is a key social variable in accounting for outcomes such as interstate conflicts, civil wars and poverty. Recent global discussions on issues such as climate change, water scarcity and energy poverty have increased the scholarly interest in the dynamics and nature of social aspects of energy systems. This course will address questions like: In what ways does the availability of energy affect public opinion and societal activities? What are the social structural and social psychological bases of energy concerns? How are energy problems different in developing nations? Why is there no societal consensus on global warming? What are the social consequences of natural resource dependency? How do different social groups view energy crises? And what are the explanations of gender inequities in energy consumption?
This course will take a sociological approach to answer these questions but it will also emphasize the need for an interdisciplinary perspective to gain an adequate understanding of technical, economic, social, regional, political and environmental dynamics of energy systems and options.


SEN 554 Energy Transportation and Logistics Management

This advanced course is designed to analyze energy transportation and logistic management from innovative perspective


SEN 556 Great Powers and Global Energy Politics

This course aims at providing an overview of how the pursuit, production, and protection of energy resources shapes the grand strategies of Great Powers since the dawn of Industrial Age.


SEN 557 Advanced Energy Project

Within the scope of the teamwork groups of three students (max four) will prepare a project with the guidance of an assigned supervisor covering the related issues discussed throughout the program including international energy security and geopolitics, and they will present their projects at the end of the semester. In an ideal project it is expected to adopt the students an analytical approach by combining their theoretical and practical knowledge on advanced energy issues and work from a different perspective. During the semester, students improve their skills related to project management by managing on the project proposal, literature review, data collection and processing, reporting and presentation.


SEN 558 Energy Markets and Political Strategies

This course is an interactive course with a lot of discussion and exchange of ideas. Focusing on the topics mentioned below, via research material, studies and articles, presentations and active discussions, those topics will be actively studied, assessed, taught and learnt in the course in an interactive way.


SEN 559 Sustainable Energy Policy Design

This advanced course is designed to investigate the dynamics of the sustainable energy policy design in a contemporary fashion.
