Although Genetics and Bioengineering is a broad discipline, it could be generally described as the application of engineering principles and methodologies to problems in medicine and biology. Integrating engineering, sciences and medicine, Genetics and Bioengineering aims to create and develop new technologies used in a variety of areas including prognosis and treatment methods, development of vaccines, artificial organ systems, personalized medicine design and transgenic plant production.
The undergraduate education program at Izmir University of Economics Genetics and Bioengineering is designed to integrate medical engineering perspective with sciences and to include academic and research programs that focus on applying engineering principles to medical problems and biological systems.
For this purpose, Izmir University of Economics Genetics and Bioengineering Program aims to both build a strong basis in basic sciences such as biology, mathematics and chemistry and, at the same time, to equip students with engineering skills such as design, measurement and modelling.
During the first 2 years of the program, students take classes in basic sciences like mathematics, physics, chemistry and molecular biology. Starting at the third year, genetics and bioengineering core courses emphasize the use of theoretical knowledge in laboratory and application. Thus, design of new technologies regarding biological systems and processes, and their development for application in areas like medicine, agriculture, environment and food are among the main objectives of this program.
