The objective of the department is to train translators and interpreters using modern education techniques in line with current scientific methodologies and approaches in the field. Students must learn to be aware of language differences and be equipped with a wide knowledge of the field of translation. They must also understand the terminology of various subjects, such as law, economics, literature, social and applied sciences, political sciences, international relations, and media and communication.
Our program, which includes theoretical knowledge and practice, is organized in a way that trains translators and interpreters equipped to satisfy market demands. Using an interdisciplinary approach, each translation course covers a variety of different disciplines which match supporting courses related to the subject areas affecting translation performance.
Our students are directed to choose one of the wide range of second foreign languages offered at IUE, such as German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Greek and Portuguese, alongside the requirements of English and Turkish.
The first two years of our four-year program is structured to strengthen language skills, compare and contrast the language structures of English and Turkish and the cultural differences between them, and to evaluate translation principles. The last two years are mostly focused on written and oral translation practices.
At the end of the fourth year, the students, under the supervision of their advisors, prepare a “graduation thesis is made up of translation items covering different areas.
