The students develop the skills of sewing, fabric surface manipulation and will be able to use basic design principles and adapt these principles to garment design. They will develop machine and hand stitching skills used in the design and in the mass production of basic products.


This course aims to develop research skills in relation to a variety of briefs which address different sectors of the industry, from a commercial to a more conceptual level. Interpretation of concepts through to design development, and ultimately product realisation are fundamental aspects of this semester while an introduction to fabric customization, and 3D design development techniques will encourage creativity. Market research and brand analysis will help students realise the positioning of their designs. Professional presentation techniques will ensure students begin to build a strong portfolio of work.


Students will investigate and experience experimental approaches to garment development and production. As a continuation of the previous semester, this course will continue to address the fashion brand and will focus specifically on brand creation in different sectors/ market levels. Students will continue to analyse existing brands, product families, brand visual identity, and target markets to better understand brand in the context of fashion design before applying this knowledge to the creation of their own brand. Students will also investigate and experience the fashion publishing industry through a live project in this area. Computer aided design will be adopted as a primary presentation tool throughout the semester and students will continue to develop presentation techniques with the intent of building a professional portfolio of work. Team work, communication skills, efficient planning and time management skills will be developed in the progress of the semester.


This course is concerned with the representation of fabrics, garments and the fashion figure. An introduction to technical drawing for fashion enables a greater understanding of garment structure; fabric rendering enables students to focus on the texture and pattern of a variety of fabric qualities. Combined with the fashion figure drawing, these skills will enable students to present their design ideas in a more professional manner.


This course will develop on existing skills to achieve a more professional level of workmanship and presentation of design ideas. It aims to develop students' ability to communicate their ideas creatively by using creative visual and digital media and to develop skills to meet current industry requirements. In addition students will apply the techniques of digital visual communication to create technical drawing, product development, branding solutions, illustration, which can be presented as a professional portfolio of work.

This is a course to introduce the basic principles of design that enable the students to establish the network of relations between the elements of a composition in any medium by way of ‘learning by doing’ method.

Students will be taught how to use the written communication tools accurately and efficiently in this course. Various types of written statements will be examined through a critical point of view by doing exercises on understanding, telling, reading, and writing. Punctuation and spelling rules, which are basis of written statement, will be taught and accurate usage of these rules for efficient and strong expression will be provided.

The first half of the course treats ideas about fashion of nonacademic authors from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century; the second half of the course will highlight the most important authors on fashion from the academic disciplines of history, art history, sociology, anthropology and gender studies.

In this course, the students have an opportunity of making a healthy career plan by coming together with the professionals from industry (managers, designers, fashion photographers, stile editors, visual merchandising experts etc.) and academic circles and by learning about opportunities and constraints which influence fashion industry. Besides, the course includes technical trips, exhibition visits and workshops and film presentations occasionally.


In this course, students are acquainted with contemporary business life and the modern corporation in an everchanging social, cultural, economic, technological, legal and ethical environment. The main objectives of the course are career planning. Professional figures like fashion designers, fashion photographers, managers and styling editors come for every week in order to share their experiences with the students. Course is also supported with technical trips and workshops.


This course examines the production processes in the mass market of fashion. In doing so, the students will acquire an understanding of the structure of the industry and production concepts. Contemporary issues in production management are considered throughout the course in order to provide a global perspective for the students. At the end of the semester, the students will be able to analyze the production processes of apparel by using professional terminology.


The students will develop a brand identity due to a particular design identity and collection character and will make positioning of the brand according to a specific market segment. Within this course the students by working in collaboration with design students, will experience on how a collection needs to be presented and launched to the consumer through an appropriate brand strategy and communication.


Starting from a sales point-of-view, students will learn how to analyze a fashion brand starting from identifying the commercial target, market and segment within the fashion industry considering internal and external business influencing factors. On the marketing side they will be visually marketing a fashion brand in print and web media and to produce a professional brand portfolio.

This course focusses on the conceptual and practical skills to represent fashion and fashion related items in a commercial manner facing the visual side of fashion retail design, fashion visual merchandising and fashion retail marketing. It is strictly considering the selling side of fashion. The buyer´s side of fashion is not subject of this course.


This course is structured in three parts; First part will be about discovering students’ own design identity with a conceptual and experimental process. Second part will cover a trend oriented fashion collection to meet with the needs of contemporary designer market level.Third section will focus on designing and crafting an evening / bridal wear parallel to a design competition .In each section the students will go through the phases of design research , design development , collection management , hand crafted and digital presentation of their design , pattern making, sewing and fabric design of their garments and photoshooting and styling of their designs.


Students will develop fashion design collections by combining their ability of critical thinking and knowledge on trend research and predictions along with fabric, material and garment design and assembly know-how and skills. Within this course students will be made familiar with theoretical concepts which create a base for fashion journalism: criticism of fashion as a social/cultural phenomenon, criticism of fashion designers as artists/creators, criticism of the way people dress. Specific journalistic texts will be analyzed in class and be used as a basis for short pieces of critical writing by the students themselves. The students will have a better understanding of the functions of images in the magazines, along with advertising campaigns and editorials.By the end of the course they are asked to complete a part of a magazine with their own creative editorial and styling work.


FA 311Footwear and Bag Design

It is proposed to pursue a program that provides specialization in fashion accessory design including textile/ clothing accessories and leather products. Following specific design methods of accessory design, trend analysis and research has been evaluated based on design periodicals ,fair observations and market knowledge to develop design alternatives. In line with the trend research and concept development , the process of design development is revealed by a sketchbook and/ or moodboards for each project. Each project and design product which is prepared during the course is presented by styling to create a fashion look .

The course is designed to teach the principles and scope of fashion business; the environmental, social, economic, demographic and psychological factors that influence the industry; the reasons behind growth and expansion; types of ownership; the structure of the fashion organizations; and the roles of designer, producer and retailer in fashion business.

This course will build on existing skills to develop a more professional standard of fashion illustration. Students will be encouraged to further develop presentation skills for design studio work. They will also be encouraged to explore illustration projects which could be employed in the context of graphic design, packaging design, and magazine editorials in the context of the fashion, beauty, and lifestyle industries. An introduction to the history of fashion illustration will help students analyse various styles, understand a variety of techniques and media, and identify various illustrators.
Projects will be developed from a conceptual viewpoint to fulfil the requirements of various briefs. There will be a strong focus on drawing while exploring various techniques and media including paint, collage, photography and computer aided design.


FA 320Advanced Technical Illustration Technique

Technical drawing is an essential skill in the fashion industry. Technical fashion drawings contain all information related to the garment design and are critical in communicating design ideas from the designer to the various members of the production team. Well executed technical drawings are essential in a fashion design portfolio, and can demonstrate the professional standard of workmanship sought by the industry. This course will build on existing skills in the Adobe Illustrator to create flat vector design drawings of garments and accessories for specification sheets and presentation boards. It will explore more complex tools, features and palettes specific to this program. This course will cover technical drawing for garments in different sectors including womenswear, menswear, lingerie, sportswear and childrenswear. A focus on proportion, shape and construction will help create professional drawings to an industry standard.


FA 350Denim Design Studio

Denim has its unique position in the world apparel industry with its special language and production methods. This course aims the students to learn about these special methods and language. During this course students will be working on denim projects in order to apply the processes of design and production of denim with details, recognize denim silhouettes, make technical drawing, make necessary pattern alterations recognize fitting mistakes and offers pattern alterations, recognize and use the machines required to produce denim.


FA 360Corporate Apparel and Uniform Design

This course will build on existing design skills to allow students to develop a portfolio of work aimed specifically at the corporate apparel & uniform sector. Students will explore the garment requirements of various industries within the service sector, including hospitality, catering, hotel, banking and airline industries. They will also investigate leisure wear for sports clubs, spa and gym sector. Students will learn to develop a concept in conjunction with the clients requirements, corporate identity and the functional capabilities and limitations of the garments. Colour, fabric, logos, and finishing’s such as print and embroidery will also be considered. A strong focus on professional presentation of design using computer aided design will allow the student to build a strong portfolio of work.

The aim of this course is to introduce to the students, the basic concepts of law and provide concise information on legal definition of new, original and conservable designs, to inform them about the “ to do list” to protect a new and original design. In addition, this course aims to ensure that they have basic information about industrial and intellectual property rights regarding registered trademarks, patents, designs and copyrights. Determining new, original and conservable design concept and to do list for protecting the registered designs.
