Course Objectives The major goal of this course is to provide a broad overview of the field of forensic psychology and the application of psychology within the legal and criminal justice systems. The knowledge and practice of forensic psychology, legal contexts in which psychologists work, the roles and functions of forensic psychologists within the justice system and how the justice system is organised in our country will be discussed. Particular emphasis will be on applied aspects of the field.
Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Describe the field of forensic psychology and the specific application areas of psychology in the legal system.
  • Understand what the forensic psychologist’s role and responsibilities are in different legal settings and contexts.
  • Define criminal behavior, and juvenile delinquency including social and developmental pathways and theories that may explain crime.
  • Learn how to interview with delinquent children and the process of writing Social Investigation Report.
  • Learn how to interview with families and couples about the issues of reunion possibilities, child custody evaluations, change of child custody and personal contact and writing evaluation reports.
  • Have information about the individualized intervention practices carried out in Probation Services and Penal Institutions.
Course Content This course promotes an understanding of the relationship between psychology and law by showing how psychological research and theory can inform the legal process. Topics include crime and delinquency, violence and intimidation, social risk factors, victims of crime, correctional psychology, court structure, obtaining information from child witnesses and ethical issues. Preparation of reports for court and other forensic settings will also be examined. Students will be introduced to the application of theory and research to real world issues and practice.
